Asheville Harmony Village is a residential community that has evolved through detailed design over the past year by first studying green sustainability and new forms of community neighborhoods that reduce the energy footprint.

Then we designed this new form of housing at a price that is affordable for the new emerging resident who is socially and environmentally aware of the changes necessary to assist our world and usher in the next housing era.

Terms that are used in describing Asheville Harmony Village:

HEALTHY BUILT

Some of the items included in the homes price are on-demand water heating, rainwater harvesting, energy star appliances, low flow plumbing, no or low VOC materials, radon venting, on-site construction, wood floors, R-19 walls,
R-38 ceiling, efficient heat pump, & rain gardens.(see Amenities page)
Progress levels of Healthy Built are determined by a point system graded by a licensed inspector, with the highest level being Healthy Built Gold.

The NC HealthyBuilt Homes Program provides a certificate for homes meeting "green home guidelines" built by residential builders who practice sustainable, high performance building strategies making the home a comfortable, healthy and affordable place that reduces energy and water usage, promotes renewable energy use and helps protect the land where the home is built.

COTTAGE COMMUNITY  /  POCKET NEIGHBORHOOD

This is a relatively new form of housing that is characterized by cottage styled homes that all face a usable landscaped commons, and have separate parking areas which are screened from the street. The homes may be one or two level designed to preserve housing diversity, affordability and character, and to discourage sprawl by allowing up to double the density of detached homes by sharing the large common green spaces.

In order to maintain a sense of privacy, homes have a low front fenced garden area with a privacy gate leading to a large covered front porch facing a sidewalk and green common area, as was the custom for village living in times past.

THE PAVILION COMMUNITY HOUSE

The community common house is designed to be used as an integral part of daily life -  with the neighborhood kitchen, dining area, indoor and outdoor sitting areas, a potential community guest room, playroom, library, garden workshop, exercise room and the list goes on to whatever the residence jointly decide to make of it.

Its true value is that it provides a place to go when you want to be with others or just be out of your own home to sit on the pavilion porch and read.

COHOUSING

Cohousing is a type of collaborative housing in which residents actively participate in the design and operation of their own neighborhoods prior to the construction. The site design is frequently arranged as described for Cottage Communities.

Cohousing residents are consciously committed to living as a community. The physical design encourages both social contact and individual space. Private homes contain all the features of conventional homes, but residents also have access to extensive common facilities such as open space, courtyards, a playground and a community common house.

To be considered as a true Cohousing community, six defining characteristics must be present, which include the residents participating design process, the unique physical neighborhood layout, a common house facility, management by residents, resident decision making, and not having a shared community economy.

UNIVERSAL DESIGN FOR ACCESSIBILITY

Universal design means creating spaces both inside and outside the home that meet the needs of all people, young and old, abled and disabled. From the arrangement of the rooms, doorways, accessible bathing, cabinet heights, or eliminating steps into the home.
Even if everyone in the home is currently able-bodied, a sudden accident or the long-term affects of illness can create mobility problems, diminished hearing  or visual impairments.
